What Is Myopia?

Myopia, or nearsightedness, makes it difficult to see distant objects clearly. It often develops in childhood and tends to worsen as children grow. While standard glasses or contact lenses correct vision, they do not stop the eye from elongating, a process that increases the risk of serious eye diseases later in life, such as glaucoma, cataracts, and retinal detachment.

Signs Your Child May Be Nearsighted

Myopia often begins in childhood, and parents are usually the first to notice changes. Common signs include:

  • Squinting to see distant objects clearly

  • Sitting close to the television or holding books very near

  • Difficulty reading the board at school

  • Complaints of headaches or eye strain

  • Frequent changes in eyeglass prescriptions

  • Reduced performance in sports or activities requiring distance vision

If your child is showing one or more of these symptoms, a comprehensive pediatric eye exam can confirm whether myopia is present and determine if early management is needed.

Pediatric Eye Exams & Ongoing Monitoring

We begin seeing children as young as 3 months old, with pediatric eye exams tailored to each stage of growth. For children at risk of or already showing signs of myopia, we provide close monitoring and regular follow-ups to track progression and adjust treatment as needed.
